Jurassic Campout

Camp McKee provided a great campout the weekend of April 24 - 26.  There were several scouts there representing Pack 73 and I am sure all had a great time.  They provided several Inflatables for the scouts enjoyment, they had the Council Pinewood Derby, and many other events.  Den 7’s very own Taylor Crittendon came in 3rd for the Open Class section of the Derby.  Overall, it was a great time and here are some photos…

Den 7 attends the “Balloon Glow”!

Den 7 attended the 2009 “Little Kentucky Derby” sponsered by the University of Kentucky Student Activities Board.  It was held this April 14 to 18.  Den 7 was there for the activities that were held on Friday which included the “Balloon Glow”.  They had a great time and would like to share some photos with everyone…

Webelos Go Swimmin’!

A number of our first and second year Webelos recently had fun participating in an aquatics program at the Beaumont Center YMCA to help them earn their Aquanaut Activity Badges and Swimming Belt Loops.  A few siblings came along, too!

Nothing better than going swimming in the winter (indoors, of course)!

Make Your Own Sports Drink

Another from the “not necessarily Scouting but semi-related” department.  Instead of buying that expensive mix or pre-mixed sports drink for your next “bug juice” need, why not make your own?

At the medical blog WebMD, they have a DIY formula for making a rehydration drink to administer to a person sick with the flu or other dehydrating illness. The formula is roughly the same as any sports drink however, the goal is to get fluid, glucose, and electrolytes into your system.

Measure all ingredients precisely:

  • 1 quart (950 mL) water
  • ½ teaspoon (2.5 g) baking soda
  • ½ teaspoon (2.5 g) table salt
  • ¼ teaspoon (1.25 g) salt substitute (potassium-based), such as Lite Salt or Morton Salt Substitute
  • 2 tablespoons (30 g) sugar

You can tweak the amount of sugar you want to include and add your own flavors, avoiding artificial dyes and preservatives in the process.

Reforest The Bluegrass 2009

reforest-09This year’s Reforest The Bluegrass event is coming up on Saturday, April 11th from 9AM until they run out of trees to plant!  It’s a fun event whether you go as a family or with your Den.  This type of service project can qualify for many different achievements in Scouting, too…from a straight required service project to Webelos Forestry Activity Badge!

For FREE registration and to find more information, go to:  http://www.lexingtonky.gov/index.aspx?page=542

The Reforest The Bluegrass program was started in March of 1999. It is a cooperative effort between the Lexington-Fayette Urban County Government’s Water Quality, Urban Forestry, and Parks & Recreation management programs. Its purpose is to recreate pre-settlement, streamside forests that were once native to the Inner Bluegrass Region of Kentucky. Today, through the efforts of thousands of volunteers, Lexington is progressively restoring those long-lost benefits of streamside forests (riparian buffers) for generations to come. This is a crucial step to protecting our valuable water resources and enhancing our living standards. Reforest The Bluegrass (RTB) uses beneficial qualities of native species of trees to bring natural balance to our ecosystems.

Webelos 2 Arrow of Light Ceremony

Many of our second year Webelos received the Arrow of Light, Cub Scouting’s highest award (equivalent to Boy Scouting’s Eagle) at the February 26th Pack meeting.  A special ceremony was held in their honor.

Congratulations to our Webelos IIs as they make the journey to Boy Scouting!
